Values

1rem is the font size of the <html> element — not the parent, which is em. Browsers default to 16px. Pick 10 if your CSS uses the font-size: 62.5% trick.

Common sizes at a 16px root

  • 8px=0.5rem
  • 10px=0.625rem
  • 12px=0.75rem
  • 14px=0.875rem
  • 16px=1rem
  • 18px=1.125rem
  • 20px=1.25rem
  • 24px=1.5rem
  • 28px=1.75rem
  • 32px=2rem
  • 40px=2.5rem
  • 48px=3rem
  • 64px=4rem

Why bother: a reader who has raised their browser’s default text size scales anything sized in rem, and nothing sized in px. That is the accessibility reason to convert, not style preference.

How it works

1Pick a direction — px to rem, or rem back to px.
2Type the value, then set the root font size. Browsers default to 16px; choose 10 if your CSS uses the font-size: 62.5% trick.
3Copy the result, or take a value straight from the reference table.
4Remember 1rem is the root element’s size, not the parent’s — that is em.
