Length

Length beats complexity: a longer password from a smaller alphabet is stronger than a short one from a bigger alphabet. Anything a password manager stores may as well be long. The maximum here is 128.

Characters to use
At least one of each kind

Guaranteeing one of each is what stops a form rejecting the password for having no digit. It costs a fraction of a bit of entropy — the figure below is the real, constrained one, not the headline number.

Look-alike characters
How many

Generated in this tab from your browser’s cryptographic random source, never sent anywhere, and never logged — the usage statistics this site keeps record the settings and the entropy, never a password. Characters are drawn with rejection sampling, so every one is equally likely; the usual shortcut of taking a random byte modulo the alphabet size quietly favours the first part of the alphabet forever.

How it works

1Set a length. Length matters more than complexity — anything a password manager stores may as well be long.
2Choose which kinds of character to use, and whether to guarantee at least one of each so a signup form cannot reject it.
3Exclude look-alike characters if the password will ever be read off a screen and typed.
4Copy one, or generate a batch. The entropy shown is the real figure, including the cost of the guarantee.
